Cristiano Ronaldo's goal for Al Nassr on Saturday night has seen him overtake long-time rival Lionel Messi for non-penalty goals, report agencies.

The 39-year-old scored his side's first Saudi Pro League goal following the winter break in the 2-1 win against Al Fateh.

He brought up his tally to 21 top-flight goals this season as Al Nassr closed the gap on leaders Al Hill to four points.

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 17th minute - finishing low into the bottom corner from inside the box.

And his strike is one that has seen him edge his fabled counterpart as he now boasts 715 non-penalty goals during his career for club and country.

Messi sits close behind on 714, although this could soon change as he and Inter Miami prepare to kickstart the new MLS season next week.

Ronaldo has now amassed 741 club goals in 995 appearances.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner's latest strike was also his 875th goal from his illustrious career which includes 128 for Portugal.

His Saudi Pro League scoring streak has also extended to five matches in a row and he has failed to find the back of the net in just four matches.

Continental action returns for Al Nassr during the week when they play Al Feiha in the AFC Champions League.

Ronaldo, who won a multitude of honours during his spell in Europe, is looking to add to the 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup he won in August.

And he is now hoping for glory in the AFC Champions League and King's Cup.
