MOSCOW, Feb 11 (AFP): Russia qualified for the Davis Cup quarter-finals when Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia was forced to retire during the first of Sunday's reverse singles against Nikolay Davydenko.
The Serbs needed Djokovic to win to level the tie at 2-2 and he took a commanding two-set lead and was two breaks of serve to the good in the third.
But with a deciding rubber looking near certain, Davydenko clawed his way back to win the set and Djokovic promptly retired at 4-6, 3-6, 6-4 complaining of feeling dizzy and nauseous.
Games went with serve until the 12th game, when the 20-year-old Monte Carlo resident broke Davydenko's serve to take the opening set in 45 minutes.
The 26-year-old Davydenko started the second set with a break but Djokovic replied positively and broke back twice for a commanding 4-1 lead, which he held on to for a two-set advantage.
In the third set Djokovic, third in the ATP rankings, broke twice from the start for a comfortable 3-0 lead but Davydenko broke back on three occasions to take the set in one hour two minutes.
Immediately after that Djokovic left the court saying he was unable to continue playing.
