Striker of Bangladesh National Women's Football team Sabina Khatun is set to be the first Bangladeshi female footballer to play for a foreign club, Maldives Police Club, in the Club Maldives Women's Futsal Fiesta-2015 in Male from March 14-April 17, reports UNB.
The 21-year-old Sabina from Satkhira district will fly for the Maldives today (Wednesday) at 4:15 pm by Maldives Airlines.
BFF President and celebrated national striker of yesteryear Kazi Mohammad Salahuddin was the first Bangladeshi international footballer to play for a local team, Carolina Hill FC, in the Hong Kong Professional League in the late '70s.
Later, Bangladeshi footballer Monem Munna played for East Bengal Club in Kolkata League with good reputation, followed by Sheikh Mohammad Aslam, Rumman Wali Bin Sabbir, Mahbub Roxy, Golam Gaus and Nurul Haque Manik who also played in the Kotkata League. Finally, Bangladesh skipper Mamunul Islam Mamun joined Atletico-de-Kolkata in the Indian Super League (ISL) last season.
Ace Bangladeshi forward Sabina, who scored 10 international goals in eight tournaments and 116 goals in national and local soccer meet over the last five years since her first appearance in the national women' s football championship in 2009.
Maldives Police Club will bear Sabina's both way airfare and local accommodation apart from the contract money.
On the eve of Sabina's departure for Maldives, Deputy Chairperson of BFF Women's wing and member of AFC Executive Committee Mahfuza Akhter Kiron introduced her proudly at a press conference at the BFF House Tuesday.
A delighted Kiron said: "We're very happy that a Bangladeshi woman for the first time will play in a foreign country. We're very proud that Sabina will fly for Maldives to play for Police Club in Maldives. It's a sign of Bangladesh women football's development."
Speaking at the press conference, Sabina said this is a big achievement in my five-year career, I'll do my best to enhance the image of the country (in foreign soil)."
"I'll try to put the best show to be the highest scorer there. So far I know the club (Police Club) became the runners-up last year. I've a target to do my best to improve the club's results," she said.
Sabina said: "We played in the 3rd SAFF Women's Championship in Pakistan last year, I scored two goals against Maldives, I think that result prompted them to choose me."
Fourteen teams are likely to take part in the Maldives Futsal Football Fiesta 2015.
BFF general secretary Abu Nayeem Sohag was present at the press conference.
