The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has suspended Shakib Al Hasan for three matches and fined him Taka USD 5800 approx (BDT 5 lakh), having found him guilty of abusing the umpires, groundstaff and equipment during Dhaka Premier League T20 match between Abahani Limited and Mohammedan Sporting Club on Friday, report agencies.
It was a level 3 offence under the BCB's code of conduct, and Shakib accepted the sanctions.
In dramatic scenes at Friday's match, Mohammedan captain Shakib had kicked the stumps after umpire Imran Parvez turned down his lbw appeal against Mushfiqur Rahim, and, an over later, ripped up all three stumps and threw them to the ground after umpire Mahfuzur Rahman called for the covers as it started to rain. It remains unclear what prompted the latter incident, as Shakib's team was well ahead of the equation as per the DLS method at that point.
An argument with the umpires and groundstaff followed, and Shakib also reportedly said something towards the Abahani dugout, leading their coach Khaled Mahmud to charge towards the Mohammedan camp. A war of words ensued and both men had to be dragged away.
After Mohammedan won the game by 31 runs (DLS method), though, Shakib looked to have resumed cordial relations with the umpires, and later apologised for his actions in a Facebook post.
Meanwhile, Ummey Al Hasan has come to the rescue of her husband and Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib after he 'lashed out at the stumps' in anger in the ongoing Dhaka Premier League (DPL) on Friday.
His wife thinks otherwise and she has appealed to the "cricket lovers" to "beware" of their actions. Ummey in a post on Facebook has stated that "a plot againt" Shakib Al Hasan to "portray him as a villain". She also raised suspicion on the decisions of the umpires.
"I'm enjoying this incident as much as the media is, finally some news on tv! It is great to see the support of the people who can see the clear picture of today's incident at least someone has the guts to stand against all odds. However it is sad to see the main issue getting buried by the media highlighting only the anger that he showed. The main issue is the ongoing eye catching decisions of the umpires! The headlines are really saddening. To me it is a plot against him that has been going on for awhile to portray him as the villain in all circumstances! If you are a cricket lover beware of your actions!" she said in a statement.
This is not the first time he has been in the news for disciplinary issues. Here's a look back at previous instances.
Anger at groundstaff, October, 2010
Shakib threatened to hit a member of the groundstaff with a bat for moving in front of the sightscreen during a Bangladesh-New Zealand ODI. The match referee gave him a warning but no further action was taken.
Gesture at crowd, March, 2011
Shakib made a middle-finger gesture towards the Shere Bangla National Stadium's grandstand after the Bangladesh-West Indies World Cup match in 2011, a game after which, in a separate incident, angry fans pelted stones at the West Indies team bus following Bangladesh's nine-wicket defeat. The photo of Shakib was published in several newspapers after it was shared widely on the internet. No action was taken.
Another rude gesture, February, 2014
Shakib was banned for three ODIs and fined US $3800 (BDT 300,000) by the BCB for pointing towards his crotch on live television, when the camera panned towards the Bangladesh dressing room during the ODI against Sri Lanka in Dhaka. Captain Mushfiqur Rahim requested the BCB to reduce the ban for the "best interests of the team".
Alleged run-in with fan, June, 2014
Shakib allegedly beat up a fan who was apparently harassing his wife at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. The incident took place when there was a rain break during the first ODI against India in 2014. After the BCB held a hearing, Shakib told the media that he wasn't aware that a player can't leave the dressing-room area during an international match.
Text to coach, July, 2014

After he texted new coach Chandika Hathurusingha that he would quit international cricket rather than join a training camp, BCB summoned Shakib to Dhaka. He was in transit in London at the time, trying a catch a flight to the Caribbean to play the 2014 CPL. Days later, BCB banned him for six months for "serious misbehaviour" with Hathurusingha, and for the incident mentioned in the previous entry. "He has a severe attitude problem, which is unprecedented in the history of Bangladesh cricket," BCB president Nazmul Hassan has said back then. But after Bangladesh's poor performance in West Indies, the BCB reduced his ban to three and a half months in August that year.
Cusses an umpire, November, 2015
During a BPL match in 2015, Shakib blew a fuse at umpire Tanvir Ahmed, abusing him openly after Ahmed turned down an lbw appeal. He was suspended for one match and was fined USD 256 approx (BDT 20,000).
The walkout threat, March, 2018
Bangladesh were irate when a no-ball for height was not given in the last over of their Nidahas Trophy match against Sri Lanka in March 2018. Mahmudullah, who was batting, argued with the umpires. Captain Shakib beckoned Mahmudullah to return to the dressing-room, in protest at the umpire's decision. Eventually Mahmudullah took them to victory with a six, and some of the players celebrated with the nagin dance, a reaction to Sri Lanka players using the same celebration previously. Amid all the drama, a glass door had also been shattered in the Bangladesh dressing room. Shakib admitted that the players, himself included, had perhaps allowed their emotions to get the better of them. He apologised later, but the BCB didn't make any public mention of their opinion of the incident.
The ICC ban, October, 2019
Days after he led a successful players' strike against the cricket board, the ICC banned Shakib for two years for failing to report an approach from a bookie. He returned from this ban in January 2021.
