Sheikh Russel KC registered their sixth win in the B League, beating Chittagong Abahani by 4-3 goals in an exciting second phase match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS) in the city Sunday, reports UNB.
With this win, Sheikh Russell KC came back strongly in the title race securing 23 points from 13 matches as they joined the top slot with Abahani Limited (23 points from 12 matches) and Mohammedan SC (23 points from 13 matches).
On the other hand, Chittagong Abahani collected 10 points from 13 outings.
Earlier, in the first phase, Sheikh Russell KC blanked Chittagong Abahani 3-0.
In the day's match, three Moroccan recruits -- Touati Youness, Noureddine Zaim and skipper Ighir Mohamed -- scored one goal each while substitute Masud Parvez Kaiser netted the other goal for the winners.
Khokon Das, Liberian recruit Abraham Bobby Fanny and Jahangir Alam scored one goal apiece for the losers.
After a barren first half, Younees broke the deadlock for Sheikh Russell KC in the 53rd minute by a right-footer from about 30 yards after getting a pass from Rida Saadane (1-0).
Three minutes later, Noureddine doubled the Russell KC margin by a left-footer from top of the small box utilising a right flank Pappu cross (2-0).
Captain Ighir scored the third goal for Russell KC by a well-judged shot from the right side of the danger zone that kissed the net hitting the side bar (3-0).
Substitute Kaiser, who replaced Rashed Ahmed Pappu, netted the fourth goal for Russell KC in the 77th minute from vantage position, fed by Ighir (4-0).
After conceding four consecutive goals, Chittagong Abahani came back with real urgency as they scored three goals in just eight minutes.
Khokon Das pulled one back in the 80th minute by a right-footed angular from the right side of the danger zone capitalising on an Abraham pass (4-1).
Abraham then converted a penalty in the 85th minute (4-2) after opponent defender Pradip fouled on Chittagong Abahani's left winger Anisur Rahman inside the danger zone.
With just two minutes left for the final whistle, Jahangir could only reduce the margin of defeat further as he netted the third goal with a shot that went home deflecting Russell KC defender Saadane (4-3).
Earlier, in the 71st minute, both teams lost one player each as Youness (Russel KC) and Othello Bonei (Chittagong Abahani) got marching orders for an off-ball clash in the midfield.
