Defending champions Sheikh Russell KC earned a facile 3-0 goals victory over Chittagong Abahani Ltd in the opening match of the Modhumoti Bank Independence Cup Football Tournament at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city Saturday, reports UNB.
After a barren first half, Striker Mithun Chowdhury struck twice and Haitian forward Pascal Milien netted the remaining goal for Sheikh Russell KC.
Earlier, Minister for Liberation War Affairs AKM Mozammel Huq inaugurated the meet as the chief guest.
Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu and Director of the meet's sponsor Modhumoti Bank Limited Mostafa Kamal were also present as the special guests on the occasion.
Striker Mithun Chowdhury scored first for Sheikh Russell KC in the 63rd minute by a cool placing shot, capitalising on a curved cross from Jamaican midfielder Ricardo Cousins from the right wing (1-0).
Pascal Milien doubled the Sheikh Russell margin in the 67th minute by a re-bounder as his first attempt was blocked by Abahani goalie Nahiduddin off a long pass of Serbian player Miroslav Savanovic (2-0).
Mithun Chowdhury sealed the fate of the match scoring his 2nd and the 3rd goal for Sheikh Russell KC in the 73rd minute by a right footer as Miroslav Savanovic paved the way for him with a neat cross from the left flank (3-0).
