February 20, 2014 00:00:00

Sri Lanka clinched the ODI series thrashing Bangladesh by 61 runs in the second match on Thursday. Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim waged a lone battle with a breezy 79 but lacked support as the team were 228 all out in 43 overs in reply to Sri Lanka’s 289 for six at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. The hosts’ top order imploded again at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur with batsmen playing rash shots. The Tigers endured a narrow 13-run defeat in the first ODI. The dead rubber of the series will be played on Feb 22 at the same venue. Nasir Hossain (22) went back trying to hoist Ajantha Mendis, but it went straight to Kithuruwan Vithanage for a simple catch at deep midwicket. Moments later, Mahmudullah (1) walked back following a misunderstanding with his captain to sink the hosts into even more despair. Shakib Al Hasan (24) holed out at long-off to Sachithra Senanayake off Ashan Priyanjan. Mominul Haque (15) edged Senanayake behind to the wicket-keeper Kumara Sangakkara giving visitors their second wicket. Anamul Haque (42) soon followed when he was trapped leg before by Thisara Perera in the next over. Bangladesh had lost opener Shamsur Rahman (0) in the very first over of their innings. Shamsur edged Lasith Malinga to Senanayake at second slip for a low catch. Earlier, Sangakkara smashed a timely century to help the islanders pile up 289 for six in their allotted 50 overs, according to a news agency.
