Tamimul wins first-ever gold for Bangladesh

Archer Mohammad Tamimul Islam clinched the first-ever gold medal for Bangladesh in the 5th Commonwealth Youth Games in the boys' individual recurve event of Archery held in Samoa Thursday, reports UNB.

Tamimul Islam brought the laurel for the country on the 6th day of the meet after beating his Indian rival Nishantha Kumawath in a gold-deciding match. Another Bangladeshi archer Nandini Khan Swapan won the bronze medal in the CW Youth Games in the girls' individual recurve event of Archery after beating her Malaysian rival Nur Amalia Hanisha Mazlan.

The previous best result for Bangladesh in the Commonwealth Youth Games was a bronze medal, won by weightlifter Fahima Akhter Moyna in the 2008 Games held in Pune, India.

A 14-member Bangladesh contingent, which competed in five disciplines of sports - Archery, Athletics, Boxing, Squash and Swimming - in the CW Youth Games, will return home from Samoa Sunday midnight (September 13).

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina greeted Bangladesh archery team for winning the gold and bronze medals in the 5th Commonwealth Youth Games held in Samoa. In a message, the PM greeted all concerned along with the Bangladesh archery team.

Sheikh Hasina also expressed the hope that Bangladesh archery team would continue their winning spree in such international events. "I hope they would uphold Bangladesh's red-green flag in the world sports," she said.

State Minister for Youth and Sports Biren Sikder congratulated the Bangladesh team for their success in the CW Youth Games and hoped that they will continue their success in future. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has congratulated the Bangladesh Archery Team for making the nation proud in the 5th Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa.

The BCB hopes that this performance by the archery team will be the catalyst for further successes in archery and other sports also. Bangladesh Olympic Association and Bangladesh Football Federation also congratulated Bangladeshi archers for their feat in the Commonwealth Youth Games.
