Tigers score 246/8 against Proteas

Bangladesh scored 246 for 8 wickets in the first innings against South Africa on day one in the series-deciding 2nd Test of the two-match National Polymer Test Cricket Series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city Thursday, reports UNB.

The fourth and second wicket stand of 94 and 69 runs respectively helped the hosts sail 246 for 8 in 88.1 overs on day one.

The World Cup hero, Mahmudullah, and skipper Mushfiqur Rahim paired to play the 94-run partnership in 29.3 overs in the fourth wicket stand before Mahmudullah was caught by Temba Bavuma off a Dale Steyn delivery.

The pair carried the team total to 180 runs for in 62.4 overs after the departure of Mominul-Imrul pair scoring 65 runs in 27.1 overs in the second wicket stand at 86 for 3 in 33.1 overs.

Mushfiqur Rahim scored the team highest 65 runs off 125 balls with seven fours and was caught by debutant Dane Vilas off a Dean Elgar delivery at 215 in 74.1 overs. This was his 15th Test fifty.

Scoring 40 off 87 balls with six fours, Mominul Haque was caught by Dane James Vilas off a Jean Paul Duminy delivery at 81 for 2 in 31.4 overs.

It was too unfortunate for Bangladesh as Imrul Kayes was trapped lbw by JP Duminy to follow Mominul soon, leaving the team total at 86 in 33.1overs.

Mahmudullah and Shakib finished their first innings batting contributions scoring 35 runs each. Shakib was caught by Dean Elgar off a Moren Morkel bowling at 245 for 7 in 87.1 overs.

In the tail end, Mohammad Shahid went out for a single facing just four balls. He was bowled out in the innings last delivery off Dale Steyn.

All -rounder Nasir Hossain was batting on 13 off 40 balls with one four when the bails were drawn for the first day.

After Mushfiqur, number seven batsman Liton Kumar Das (3 off 11b) failed to stay long with Shakib as he was caught by Dean Elgar off JP Duminy.

The Tigers faced early shake as opener Tamim Iqbal (6 off 15b, 1X4) was sent back too early, leaving team total at 12 for 1 in 4.3 overs.  Tamim Iqbal was caught by skipper Hashim Amla off a Dale Steyn delivery.

Dismissing Tamim, the 32-year-old Proteas paceman joined a selected group of bowlers to claim 400 wickets, to be the second South African after Shaun Pollock who takes 421 and the 13th overall.

Dale Steyn success came in his 80th Test. He started the two-Test series against Bangladesh with 396 Test wickets requiring four scalps and took three wickets for 78 runs in the first Test in Chittagong and finally, reached the landmark in his third over's third delivery in the first innings of the second Test on day one in Mirpur.

Jean Paul Duminy and Dale Steyn grabbed three wickets each for 27 and 30 runs respectively. Dean Elgar and Morne Morkel took one wicket each.
