Tigresses crush Papua New Guinea in T20 World Cup Qualifiers

Bangladesh Women registered their second consecutive victory in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Qualifiers, defeating Papua New Guinea by 30 runs at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, Nepal, on Tuesday, reports BSS.

Asked to bat first, the Tigresses posted a competitive 168 for 5, powered by a blistering cameo from Shorna Akter,

who smashed 37 off just 14 deliveries. Her innings included one four and four sixes - the most sixes struck by a Bangladeshi batter

in a Women's T20 International, surpassing the

previous record of three held by Ayesha Akhter.

Opener Dilara Akter laid a solid foundation with a 35 off 29 balls, while Sharmin Akter Supta and Sobhana

Mostary provided momentum in the middle order. Mostary scored 34 from 24 balls, hitting

two fours and two sixes, and Supta added 28.

In response, Papua New Guinea were restricted to 138 for 9. Captain Brenda Tau was the top-scorer for the side with 35 while Sibona Jimmy contributed 28.

Bangladesh shared the bowling duties effectively, with seven players used and six of them claiming one wicket each. Sultana

Khatun was the only bowler to go wicketless.

Bangladesh will face Namibia tomorrow (Thursday) and Ireland on January 24 in their remaining Group A fixtures.

The top three teams from Group A will progress to the

Super Six stage, where they will compete against the top three teams from Group B, which comprises hosts Nepal, Thailand, Zimbabwe, the Netherlands and Scotland.

The top four teams from the Super Six will qualify for the

ICC Women's T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in England and Wales in June-July this year.
