The 8th ULAB Fair Play Cup Inter-Private University T20 Cricket Tournament, under the auspices of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), begins today (Thursday) at its playground in Ramchandrapur area of Mohammadpur in the city, reports UNB.
Defending champions ULAB will meet North South University in the opening match today (Thursday).
A total of 16 university teams, split into four groups, will initially compete on league basis matches. Later, the group champion and runner-up teams will qualify for the knockout basis Super-8 stage (quarterfinals).
The four winning teams of the Super 8 stage will earn the rights to play in the semifinals on February 9 and 10 and the final will be held on February 11.
Vice-chancellor of ULAB Prof Imran Rahman disclosed this at a press conference at the Dutch-Bangla Auditorium of Bangladesh Olympic Association Wednesday.
Former captain of Bangladesh National Cricket Team and Advisor of ULAB Fair Play Cup Cricket Tournament ASM Roquibul Hassan and Registrar of ULAB Lt Col (retd) Foyzul Islam also spoke on the occasion.
Participating teams are: BRAC University, North South University, East West University, Northern Univer -sity Bangladesh, United International University, State University of Bangla -desh, Manarat International University, Independent University Bangladesh, University of Asia Pacific, South East University, Eastern University, Green University of Bangladesh, Premier University of Chittagong, University of Information Technology and Sciences, European University of Bangladesh and hosts University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB).
Maximum two professional cricketers of the first division/premier division cricket leagues or the same level and above cricket meet will be allowed to play in the tournament, subject to student of the respective universities.
The champion team will receive Tk 40,000 while the runners-up will get Tk 25,000 as prize money.
Besides, the champion team will also earn the rights to play in the Red Bull Campus Cricket Tournament to be held in India or Australia. Last year's champions ULAB played in the Bed Bull Campus Cricket held in England in 2014.
ULAB successfully organised the Fair Play Cup Inter-Private University Cricket Tournament since 2006 at their tournament-standard owned playground in Ramchandrapur in an objective to establish good relations among private universities and as well as to contribute the development cricket in Bangladesh.
