Bangladesh Under-19 team made a winning start to the five-match Youth ODI series against Afghanistan, pulling off a thrilling five-run victory on DLS method in the first match at Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogura on Tuesday, reports BSS.

Iqbal Hossain Emon claimed 5-57 and Kalam Siddiki hit a century to be instrumental in the match, trumping an epic effort of Afghan middle order batter Uzairullah Niazai, who hammered an unbeaten 137 ball-140 not out with 16 fours and one six.

Thanks to his knock, Afghanistan managed to put up 265-9 but Kalam's grit was key in Bangladesh's solid reply as the hosts reached 231-4 in 46 overs when the light deemed unfit to continue the match. On DLS, Bangladesh Under-19 were five runs ahead and so declared winner.

Kalam Siddiki struck 119 ball-101 with 11 boundaries, keeping the side ahead always in terms of DLS issue.

Bangladesh made a disastrous start by losing opener Zawad Abrar (15) and skipper Azizul Hakim Tamim for duck, which left them 15-2 but Kalam's resistance steadied the innings.

He shared 45-run with Rifat Beg, who made 26 for the third wicket before adding 139-run with Rizan Hossain for the fourth wicket, a partnership that edged the side closer to the victory.

Kalam was dismissed with the side 29 runs away from the victory but Rizan was not out on 75, taking the side home.

Earlier, Emon prevented Afghanistan from putting up a healthy total despite the monumental effort of Niazai. He took wickets at regular interval while Niazai was firm in the other end. Kalam's batting performance earned him the man of the match award.

The second match is on Friday at the same venue.
