Young Tigers earn big win over New Zealand

Bangladesh Under-19 cricket team beat New Zealand U-19 team by six wickets in the first match of the five-match Youth ODI series at Lincoln on Sunday, reports UNB.

New Zealand batted first after winning the toss and tumbled for 176 in 48 overs. Bangladesh chased the target of 178 with six wickets in hand in 38.4 overs, finishing on 180 for 4.

Batting first, New Zealand lost five wickets for 100 runs. They were heavily troubled by two Bangladesh left-arm pace-bowler Shoriful Islam and Mrittunjoy Chowdhury as both bagged three wickets each.

Shoriful conceded 44 runs in nine overs to take three wickets while Mrittunjoy conceded only 21 runs in nine overs to bag as many wickets.

Ben Pomare, the wicketkeeper-batsman of New Zealand, who came to bat at number seven, posted 40- the highest individual score by a Kiwi in the match while Ollie White was the second-highest runs scorer hitting 30.

For Bangladesh, Shamim Hossain bagged two wickets while Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Rakibul Hasan took one wicket each, apart from Shoriful and Mrittunjoy.

In reply, Bangladesh lost four wickets before passing 100-run mark. Parvez Hossain Emon was the first batsman to get dismissed as Bangladesh were batting at 11 in 3.1 overs. In the second wicket stand, Tanzid Hasan and Mahmudul Hasan Joy added 30 runs.

Both of them scored 28 each before getting dismissed. However, Bangladesh captain Akbar Ali hit unbeaten 65 to bring the team to win with six wickets in hand.

Along the way, Akbar and Shahadat Hossain added 81 runs in the fifth wicket stand.

Before the first game of the series, Bangladesh won the only practice game by a big margin of 146 runs against Canterbury Invitation XI on September 27. Tanzid Hasan hit a century in the practice game.

The remaining matches of the series will take place on October 2, 6, 9 and 13 at the same venue.
