The government would set up a 1320-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station in Patuakhali and it is set to start the land development work at the proposed site of the plant, officials said Saturday.
The state-owned North-West Power Generation Company Ltd (NWPGCL) has already sought approval of Tk 8.06 billion for land development at Dhankhali of Kalapara Upazila in south-western Patuakhali.
A joint-venture of the NWPGCL and a Chinese company would set up the coal-fired ultra-super critical power plant where the land would be developed by the state-owned power generation company.
Meanwhile, the NWPGCL has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the CMC China during the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Beijing early this month.
A power division official said they had sent a Tk 8.06 billion project proposal to the Planning Commission for land development at the proposed project site in Patuakhali.
The NWPGCL will develop the land and build the residential houses for the staffs at the project site by 2016, he added.
After developing the land, the NWPGCL and CMC China will start construction of the 1320MW power station, the official said.
NWPGCL officials said they would acquire 1000 acres of land for setting up the ultra super critical thermal power plant.
He said this will be the third newly planned coal-fired power plant in the country after the 1320MW plant at Rampal and another 1200MW plant at Matarbari in Cox's Bazar.
"The coal for the proposed plant at Patuakhali will be imported from Australia or Indonesia. Best coal of the world will be used for operating the plant," said the Power Division official.
He said since Bangladesh has had natural gas shortage, the government has now decided to set up some big coal-based power stations to generate electricity for meeting the growing demand of the country.
The state-owned Power Development Board (PDB) and Indian company NTPC have already started setting up the 1320MW plant jointly at Rampal in Bagerhat.
Besides, the Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) has taken up the 1200MW coal-fired power station project at Matarbari in Cox's Bazar with the financial support of the Japanese government.
Bangladesh's largest bilateral donor Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) would bankroll the plant partially providing nearly US$3.7 billion worth of loans in some few tranches.
