400 underprivileged young women complete Citi UCEP course

Citibank, N.A., Bangladesh and Underprivileged Children's Educational Program (UCEP), a non-governmental organization (NGO) partner organized a Certificate Awarding Ceremony on Sunday for the underprivileged young women graduated under the "Citi UCEP Technical Education Programme".

The ceremony was attended by Abu Hena Mohd. Razee Hassan, Head of Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit and former Deputy Governor, Bangladesh Bank as Chief Guest and Rubana Huq, President, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) as special guest.

N. Rajashekaran, Citi Country Officer, Bangladesh; Parveen Mahmud, Chairman, UCEP Bangladesh; Tahsinah Ahmed, Executive Director, UCEP Bangladesh; officials from both the organisations and students were also present at the program at UCEP Head Office, Dhaka.

Abu Hena Mohd. Razee Hassan said, "Development of women workforce is important to achieve economic progress of the country. I believe this joint effort towards women empowerment and youth employability will create future leaders across industrial skill sets which are timely and in high demand".

Rubana Huq added, "The challenge to include women from underprivileged background and to train them through proving skills that are meaningful and timely is just what we need at this moment of time. I congratulate the girls and wish them continued success".

During his remarks, N. Rajashekaran said, "Citi Foundation is focused on preparing today's young people to be the most employable generation yet. The success of these young womenis vital to flourish our communitiesand drive the economy. Hence, the need of skills development and making them future ready has never been greater".

Parveen Mahmud said, "Citi UCEP Technical Education Program directly support to the underprivileged female youth to change their socio economic condition. After complete the TVET and Skills Training under Citi UCEP Technical Education Program, they are joining in different industries and earning money and contribute their family. Hope Citi UCEP Technical Education Programme will continuous support to underprivileged female youth".

Tahsinah Ahmed added, "I am delighted to attend this event here to celebrate the success of this important project. Girls and women play a critical role in the advancement of society and their empowerment is essential. I congratulate all the graduates and hope that they will be inspired to take up meaningful jobs and move further to develop their careers. UCEP Bangladesh is grateful to Citi Foundation for its support in this endeavor".

The Citi Foundation, philanthropic arm of Citigroup, has been implementing the Citi UCEP Technical Education project since 2014 in partnership with UCEP. More than 1200 underprivileged young women age group between 17 to 25 years received skills training under this programme.

The students received training in the most highly demanded skill areas, namely Industrial Sewing Operations and Electronic Assembling Technician. The programme was implemented in UCEP's Dhaka, Gazipur, Jatrabari and Chattogram technical schools.
