A total of 6,000 traders across the country will get the opportunity of importing used clothes in this fiscal year (FY), 2013-14, officials said.

Importers will be selected on the basis of population density of each district and through lottery by the deputy commissioner (DC) concerned, they said.

Each of the traders can import used clothes worth maximum Tk 0.1 million.

They have to submit proper certificates that the consignments of clothes, imported from different countries, are free of all toxic or hazardous substances.

For importing used clothes the traders will have to apply to the DCs by February 16. Letters of credit (LCs) have to be opened by April 10, and shipments must be done within July 30.

Importers said the government's agency concerned should have taken the decision regarding importing second-hand clothes before November. The imported items are mainly used during the winter session. So it is too late, they opined.

A total of 481 importers will be selected from Dhaka region, including the capital. Some 888 importers will be selected from other districts of the region.

Besides, rest of the importers will be selected from other divisions - Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet, Barisal and Rangpur, according to the Office of Chief Controller of Imports and Exports.

The importers also said import of used clothes has been rising gradually throughout the years due to their increasing demand.

"In the winter season, used warm clothes have great demand, mainly to the country's fixed-income group people, for their affordable prices," they added.

The importers can bring products, like - cardigan, sweater, jacket, trouser, blanket and synthetic and blended clothes etc.
