CHITTAGONG, August 31: The importance of stock exchanges and capital markets in helping the developing and emerging economies such as Bangladesh to reach their potential was explored at a seminar organised by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) in the port city on Saturday night.
Swapan Kumar Bala, managing director of Dhaka Stock Exchange, spoke on the function as chief guest while Kazi Tanzeeb Shahid, ACCA member, also assistant general manager and head of internal at Chittagong Stock Exchange was the keynote speaker.
The event was based on a global report produced by ACCA titled Making capital markets work in emerging and frontier economies. It looked at the importance of certain markets in global economic growth and the uncertainty of having the finances to help nourish the same.
Professor Bala noted that organizing such a conference on capital markets fulfills one of the ACCA's key aims of bringing the policymakers, regulators, exchange operators and corporate decision-makers from the most dynamic emerging economies together on a regional basis in order to determine what lessons can be learned and shared from their success and failure, why some markets succeed where others fail and what the profession can do to support financial deepening in the public interest.
"Here in Bangladesh, it is important for the accounting profession to distinguish between problems specific to individual listed firms, which must be challenged strongly by individual accountants and auditors, and systematic problems which must be dealt with at a higher policy level," he said.
Managing Director of Island Securities Ltd Mohammed Mohiuddin emphasized on deep learning and knowledge of financial reporting and urged the ACCA and other such organizations to arrange wide range of training and research for the capacity building and professional skill of media people who make reports on the capital market.
Mohua Rashid, country head of ACCA Bangladesh said that her organization has arranged one of the ACCA's research and insight events for the first time in the port city of Chittagong. It is also pleasing that the topic is very relevant to the country perspective and discusses a pressing issue of today's business world.
"ACCA believes that capacity building around financial systems is essential. This allows capital markets to enable the most promising firms to secure funds more efficiently. To do this, the firms need access to reliable information which cannot be done without the skills of professional accountants," she said.
ACCA is the global body of professional accountants that has been working in 180 countries and aims to offer business-relevant, first-choice qualifications to people of application, ability and ambition around the world who seek a rewarding career in accountancy, finance and management.
