Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has initiated a move to prepare a biometric database of its member-factory owners, aiming to ensure speedy and smooth services digitally.

The apex apparel sector trade body, in a circular issued on Monday, asked all its members to provide their biometric data, including fingerprint, signature and photo in between January 21 and February 25 to the association.

The biometric data of the factory owners will be collected at five booths - one each at Dhaka's Uttara Club, Gulshan Club, Banani Club and the BGMEA headquarters, and BGMEA regional office in Chattogram, it said.

According to the circular, the BGMEA's latest move to digitise all its services came in line with the government's vision of 'Digital Bangladesh'.

"The biometric data of the factory owners will be necessary for availing any stimulus package announced by the government, renewal of membership, transfer of ownership, visa service, online utilisation declaration (UD) processing and cash incentive," the trade body said.

The apparel body has already started digital UD services from January 16, the circular added.

Earlier, BGMEA prepared a workers' biometric database that included about 2.6 million of garment workers.

According to the BGMEA, more than 4,000 RMG factories are affiliated with the trade body while about 1,900 units of them are now active.
