BIDA to hold roadshow to woo FDI

The government is set to hold road shows in different countries within next few months aiming to attract more foreign direct investment (FDI), officials said.
The road show will kick-start from China to cover Beijing and Guangzhou. It is likely to be held either in late March or early April.
Other road shows might be held in the USA, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in May or June.
A two-day event will be arranged at each venue of all road shows, according to Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA).
A source said, "We have mainly focused on a large amount of FDI within next two or three years in the country. Net inflow of FDI into Bangladesh went up by 50.71 per cent in the last fiscal year (FY'19)."
BIDA is expecting huge foreign investments in different sectors of the country especially readymade garment, information and communications technology, agriculture-based industries and pharmaceuticals, he added.
The government is committed to providing facilities to foreign investors and enhancing its global competitiveness, he also mentioned.
When contacted, BIDA Executive Chairman Md. Sirazul Islam said, "We will mainly focus to attract FDI through road shows. Besides, we want to present Bangladesh to foreign countries."
Effort for road shows is now in initial stage, he added.
BIDA will organise the road shows. Different state entities including Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority and Public Private Partnership Authority will sponsor the shows.
ICI, I0T, RMG, agri-based industries, pharmaceutical and API sectors will be highlighted in the road show to be held in China. These sectors will also be highlighted in USA/Canada and Saudi Arab/Kuwait road shows.
On day one, different sectors will give presentation to be followed by question-answer sessions. B2B/G2B sector-specific group discussions will be held on the second day.
A Bangladesh delegation to China will comprise 50-60 members from both public and private sectors.
The Bangladesh Embassy in China will be requested to prepare venue, arrange local transport and accommodation etc. They will also communicate with Chinese investment promotion agencies and business community.
American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) will contact the Bangladesh Embassy, USA for arranging the road show there.
BIDA will also contact the Bangladesh Embassy, USA and Canada as early as possible to finalise the date and venue.
The central bank data showed that net FDI increased to US$3.89 billion in FY'19 from US$2.58 billion in FY'18.
