BSC leads DSE turnover chart for second day

Share price drops 7.76pc in two days after recent 'abnormal' surge

Bangladesh Shipping Corporation dominated the Dhaka Stock Exchange's turnover list for the second straight session on Tuesday while ten most-traded stocks accounted for 30 per cent transactions.

According to the DSE data, some 5.08 million shares of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation were traded, generating a turnover of Tk 706 million, which was 4.97 per cent of the day's total turnover.

The shipping corporation's share price, however, fell 4.34 per cent to close at Tk 136.70 on Tuesday. Its share price plunged 7.76 per cent in the past two consecutive sessions after rising 'abnormally' in the recent times.

In the past one and a half months until February 6, the state-run listed entity's share price jumped over 200 per cent or Tk 98.80 each to reach at Tk 148.20, riding on higher profits.

The state-run corporation has reported a 73.67 per cent increase in its net profit during the fiscal year (FY) 2020-2021 to Tk 719.9 million thanks to a surge in shipping fares, and a decrease in ship operating costs.

Its share price traded between Tk 38.50 and Tk 155.90 in the last one year.

The company's first quarter (Q1) earnings per share (EPS) stood at Tk 4.34 for July-September 2021 as against Tk 0.58 for July-September 2020.

Meanwhile, the company will hold a board meeting today (Wednesday) at 2:35pm to consider, among others, un-audited financial statements for the second quarter (Q2) ended December 31, 2021.

Islami Bank Bangladesh came second on the turnover chart, with shares worth Tk 578 million changing hands. The bank's share advanced 0.30 per cent to close at Tk 33.10 each on Tuesday.

Beximco clinched the third spot, with shares worth Tk 526 million changing hands. The company's share closed at Tk 149.30, gaining 0.27 per cent over the previous day.

Fortune Shoes emerged as the fourth, with shares worth Tk 475 million changing hands. The shoe maker's share fell slightly by 0.24 per cent to close at Tk 124.40 each.

Bay Leasing & Investment notched the fifth spot, with shares worth Tk 431 million changing hands. The financial institution's share closed at Tk 35.20, rising 10 per cent, becoming the day's top gainer.

The turnover of British American Tobacco Bangladesh was Tk 430 million. The multinational company's share price fell by 1.30 per cent to close at Tk 646 each.

Queen South Textile Mills featured a turnover of Tk 362 million. The textile company's share closed at Tk 31.70, gaining 1.28 per cent over the previous day.

The turnover of Delta Life Insurance was Tk 327 million. The life insurer's share price advanced 2.02 per cent to close at Tk 177.10 each.

Orion Pharma featured a turnover of Tk 286 million. The company's share price closed at Tk 106.80 each, shedding 0.65 per cent.

Acme Laboratories also made its way to the day's top turnover chart, with shares worth Tk 284 million changing hands. The company's share price dropped 1.16 per cent to close at Tk 102.50 each.
