Core index crosses 7000 points mark

Dhaka bourse closed Tuesday's session with a moderate rise both in broad index and turnover value riding on investors' increased participation.

On the day, the DSEX, broad index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), crossed 7000-point mark after 23 sessions executed on the premier bourse.

Of the major sectors, fuel & power, engineering and pharmaceuticals & chemicals played a pivotal role behind the rise in turnover value.

The market opened the day's session positively and the DSEX continued an upward trend for half an hour.

Another upward trend was observed after the mid-session and the core index closed the session with a moderate rise.

At the end of the session, the DSEX settled at 7049.15 with a rise of 0.78 per cent or 54.99 points.

According to the market operators, Square Pharmaceuticals, Titas Gas, Beximco Pharmaceuticals and the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation played major role behind the moderate rise of the broad index.

The shariah based index DSES on Tuesday advanced 1.02 per cent or 15.18 points to close at 1495.87.

The DS30 index comprising blue chip securities went up by 0.77 per cent or 20.11 points to close at 2626.66.

According to a market review of EBL Securities, Dhaka stocks observed a sharp upturn and equity indices of DSE was influenced by investors' increased participation.

"Though the market observed profit booking sell pressure in the late session, most of the large-cap stocks took firm position on the trading board supported by active participation of institutional investors," said the EBL Securities.

Of 378 issues traded, 189 advanced, 146 declined and 43 were unchanged on the DSE on Tuesday.

On the day, the DSE posted a turnover of Tk 19.76 billion which was 32.60 per cent higher than the turnover of the previous session.

Of total turnover, Tk 246 million came from transactions executed in block board.

Investors' participation was concentrated mostly on fuel & power sector which grabbed 17.2 per cent of the market turnover followed by engineering 11.1 per cent, miscellaneous 9.4 per cent, pharmaceuticals & chemicals 9.0 per cent, financial institutions 7.0 per cent, and textile 6.8 per cent.

Power Grid Company of Bangladesh topped the scrip wise turnover chart with a value of Tk 1.33 billion followed by Beximco Tk 1.22 billion, Titas Gas Transmission & Distribution Company Tk 726 million, Fareast Islami Life Insurance Company Tk 697 million and Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Tk 598 million.

Of the large cap companies, the share price of Grameenphone advanced 0.97 per cent, Square Pharmaceuticals 2.49 per cent, Beximco 0.13 per cent, British American Tobacco Bangladesh Company 0.09 per cent and Renata 0.45 per cent.

Eastern Cables was the number one gainer with a rise of 9.97 per cent to close at Tk 148.80 each.

Khulna Printing & Packaging was the worst loser after declining 6.90 per cent to close at Tk 10.80 each.

CASPI, benchmark index of Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), advanced 0.92 per cent or 189.56 points to close at 20667.35.

Of 310 issues traded, 165 advanced, 114 declined and 31 were unchanged and the port-city bourse CSE posted a turnover of Tk 627.02 million on Tuesday.
