The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has taken an initiative to strengthen multi-faceted security, focusing on the Maritime Single Window concept. The CPA is regularly organising various training sessions for its officers and employees. The most recent training sessions on the use of the Indo-Pacific Information Sharing Tool 'IORIS' were held from March 3-13, funded by the European Union, at the Chittagong Port Training Center.
Under the direction of CPA Chairman Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman, these training sessions were organised to strengthen the security measures of the country's port sector. IORIS is a maritime information-sharing platform funded by the European Union.
A total of 28 trainees from various organisations, including the Ministry of Shipping, Bangladesh Navy and Chittagong Port, participated in the two-phase training. The purpose of this training was to demonstrate how maritime stakeholders can easily exchange information, analyze data, plan, and implement actions to work together using the maritime information tool.
Through this platform, maritime stakeholders located around the world will not only be able to share information but will also be able to quickly learn and communicate about regional threats, human trafficking, illegal smuggling, and other maritime crimes.
This type of training, conducted with the collaboration of the Ministry of Shipping, Bangladesh Navy, and Chittagong Port Authority, will result in the integration of ports into the modern IORIS platform, which will be considered a fulfilment of the FAL Convention of IMO.
At the closing ceremony of the training on March 13, certificates were given to the trainees by CPA Chairman Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman. He said, "This training was primarily organized to ensure maritime security and safety in Bangladesh. Through this training, six trainers in Maritime Single Window were created for the first time in Bangladesh, who will be able to provide IORIS training internationally maintaining global standards."
