Dhaka bourse edges up amid mixed performance of blue chips

FE REPORT | February 28, 2024 00:00:00

Large-cap companies on Tuesday showed mixed performance as investors were active on both sides of the trading fence, leading to a marginal gain of the broad index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE).

The market opened the day's session with a positive note and the DSE broad index DSEX exhibited volatility for more than an hour.

After the midsession, the DSEX experienced a declining trend for around two hours and lost 31 points due to corrections witnessed by some large companies.

Finally, the broad index was able to edge up, riding on investors' last hour buying spree.

Of the large-cap companies, Square Pharmaceuticals, Renata, IFIC Bank, and Unique Hotel & Resorts experienced corrections on the DSE.

But the appreciation witnessed by a majority of the listed stocks helped the DSEX to close higher with a gain of 13 points to 6272 points.

The sectors having small-cap companies, including paper & printing and life insurers, were on the top of the sectoral gainers.

The DSE returned to the green territory after a single-day break as buyers regained their dominance and sought bargain hunting opportunities in the oversold stocks that they believed to be at lucrative price levels following the recent corrections, reads a market review of EBL Securities.

Of the day's index pullers, BBS Cables, Uttara Bank, Aftab Automobiles, and Sea Pearl Beach Resort & Spa added 7.9 points in total to the broad index.

The premier bourse DSE on Tuesday featured a turnover of Tk 8.98 billion, 11.59 per cent up from the previous session.

The pharmaceuticals & chemicals sector witnessed the highest participation from investors and contributed 15.2 per cent to the market turnover, followed by the textile, engineering and the food & allied sectors.

Best Holdings was the scrip-wise turnover leader, with a transaction volume of Tk 516 million, followed by Fu Wang Ceramic Industries and Central Pharmaceuticals.

Prime Finance First Mutual Fund was the number one gainer with a rise of 10 per cent while Khulna Printing & Packaging was the day's worst loser after declining 9.64 per cent.

CASPI, benchmark index of the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), gained 5.69 points to close at 17937 on Tuesday.
