DSE market-cap hits all-time high

Stocks extend rally for second day

Stocks extended their rally for the second day on Wednesday, with the market capitalisation of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) climbing to an all-time high at Tk 5,097 billion, thanks to increased investor participation.

The market-cap surpassed the previous high of Tk 5,089 billion recorded just four days ago on June 3.

The value of listed securities on the country's premier bourse went up by Tk 266 billion in a month, as investors started pouring their money into the market.

On the day, DSEX, the prime index of the premier bourse, settled 31.89 points or 0.52 per cent higher at 6,055, the highest level in more than three years since February 4, 2018.

Two other indices also closed higher, the DSE 30 Index, comprising blue chips, advancing 6.64 points to finish at 2,202 and the DSE Shariah Index (DSES) gaining 5.70 points to close at 1,296.

Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, jumped to 10-and-a-half-year high at Tk 27 billion on the country's premier bourse, which was 31 per cent higher than the previous day's mark of Tk 20.65 billion.

The bargain hunters continued their buying pressure amid high expectations riding on the news that the World Bank upgraded Bangladesh's GDP growth forecast for this fiscal year, commented International Leasing Securities.

The stockbroker noted that the investors' confidence in the market is expected to remain bullish due to lower return from the money market along with regulator's initiative to develop the market.

The enthusiastic investors took position in IT, textile, insurance and financial institutions sectors, while some others reshuffled their portfolios.

The IT sector saw the highest return, gaining 5.80 per cent, followed by life insurance (2.6 per cent), textile (2.60 per cent), general insurance (1.0 per cent) and financial institutions (1.0 per cent).

On the other hand, banking, food and power sector saw correction of 0.50 per cent, 0.40 per cent and 0.10 per cent respectively.

Gainers took a strong lead over the losers, as out of 369 issues traded, 208 advanced, 124 declined and 37 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Beximco continued to dominate the turnover chart with shares worth Tk 1.55 billion changing hands, followed by LankaBangla Finance (Tk 734 million), National Polymer (Tk 659 million), National Feed Mills (Tk 614 million) and Pioneer Insurance (Tk 589 million).

VFS Thread Dyeing was the day's top gainer hitting the upper limit circuit breaker with 10 per cent gain, while Federal Insurance was the worst loser, losing 7.39 per cent.

A total of 364,006 trades were executed in the day's trading session with a trading volume of 785.26 million shares and mutual fund units.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also ended high with the CSE All Share Price Index - CASPI - rising 84 points to settle at 17,515 and the Selective Categories Index - CSCX -- gaining 50 points to close at 10,555. Of the issues traded, 182 advanced, 96 declined and 31 issues remained unchanged on the CSE.
