Egypt wants to import raw hides from Bangladesh

Egyptian Ambassador to Bangladesh Omar Mohie Eldin Ahmed Fahmy paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu at the Secretariat in the city on Sunday.

Egypt is interested in importing raw hides from Bangladesh and tapping into the country's experience to develop its jute industry.

Egyptian Ambassador to Bangladesh Omar Mohie Eldin Ahmed Fahmy expressed the interest during a courtesy call with State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu at the Secretariat office on Sunday.

The state minister confirmed Egypt's interest in Bangladeshi raw hides and added that the country also seeks to develop its jute industry by learning from Bangladesh's experience in the sector.

Besides, he envisioned Egypt as a "gateway" for expanding Bangladeshi trade and business opportunities.

Mentioning Bangladesh's developments over the recent years, the state minister said that the Ministry of Commerce is actively pursuing trade deals with 26 countries worldwide.

He hoped that future visits by Egyptian businesses to Bangladesh would further increase investment opportunities.

Prior to the meeting with the Egyptian Ambassador, Ahasanul Islam Titu joined the Annual Performance Agreement (APA) signing event as the chief guest for agencies under the Ministry of Commerce.

Commerce Secretary Md Selim Uddin presided over the event. The state minister reiterated the ministry's commitment to graduating Bangladesh from Least Developed Country (LDC) status under the leadership of the prime minister.

He called for increasing digitalisation to facilitate a more efficient trade environment across the country.

Heads and senior officials from different agencies under the Ministry of Commerce were present at the APA signing.
