FE Report | April 30, 2015 00:00:00

A Chinese delegation Wednesday discussed the establishment of regional stock exchange with the securities regulator as part of the initiative to strengthen economic relationship among Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar (BCIM), officials said.

The discussion was held at the office of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) between the delegation of Yunnan Government Financial Affairs Office of China and the BSEC policy makers.

Chinese delegation led by Yang XiaoPing, the president of the Yunnan branch of China's central bank, also visited the central bank and the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and exchanged their views.

The officials said the securities regulator showed positive interest on the establishment of regional stock exchange and confirmed its assistance in BCIM activity.

The meeting also focused on cross border trading, listing and relationship building between the stock exchanges of two countries.

BSEC chairman Prof. M Khairul Hossain and four commissioners such as Md. Helal Uddin Nizami, Md. Amzad Hossain, Arif Khan, Md. A. Salam Sikder and CSE Chairman Dr. Muhammad Abdul Mazid were present at the meeting held with the Chinese delegation.

BSEC commissioner Arif Khan said the Chinese delegation visited Bangladesh as part of continuous travel to the BCIM countries.

"It's the initial meeting with the securities regulator on the establishment of the regional stock exchange. More discussions will be held in future on establishment of regional stock exchange," Mr Khan said.

The chairman of Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) Dr. Muhammad Abdul Mazid said the establishment of Pan Asia Stock Exchange is one of the mechanisms of strengthening the economic cooperation in the South Asia region.

"Chinese government chose Yunnan province, which has border with BCIM countries, to establish the Pan Asia Stock Exchange.

Both the bourses need the consent of the government to participate in regional stock exchange. That's why the Chinese delegation met the securities regulator and the central bank," Mr. Mazid told the FE.

Meanwhile, the Chinese delegation Wednesday visited the premier bourse, DSE, and exchanged views.
