CHATTOGRAM, Oct 26: Sitrang made landfall in Chattogram, Patuakhali and Barisal coastline 72 hours ago but the pre-cyclone rains which submerged those areas, including the port city, has left a trail of devastation in the region.

Apart from rain water, wind-driven tidal surge from Karnaphului River and the northeast Bay inundated many places of the port-city, including low-lying Chaktai, Khatunganj and Asadganj areas causing water-logging, greatly affecting normal life, harming trade activities.

Businesses in Chaktai, Khatunganj and Asadganj which, along with Agrabad constitute the main commercial centre of the port city have remained under knee-deep to waist-deep water since the cyclonic storm left for India's north-eastern areas after weakening and developing into low.

As most of the warehouses in Chaktai-Asadganj trade hubs containing essential items, including grains and foodstuff, rain water which entered the storages and godowns there have damaged goods worth millions of Taka. Most of the goods were stored in those warehouses for supplying to different parts of the country following imports.

Traders said due to incessant rains and tidal surge on Monday, water entered go-downs of the three areas inundating hundreds of tonnes of essentials, including rice and onion. Most of the items have started rotting under stagnant water in the last 72 hours. Many places remained under knee-deep water till filing of this report at 8:00pm on Wednesday, according to the trading sources.

Besides the trade hubs, other low-lying areas of the city, including Korbaniganj and Rajakhali also remained water-clogged until Wednesday evening. Water-logging in those areas have also damaged a large quantities of perishable items, including rice, lentils, sugar, onion, garlic, tea and spices as water flooded wholesale markets, shops and warehouses there following the extreme natural event.
