General Electric Manufacturing Company Limited (GEMCO) signed a contract on Monday for supplying 825 distribution transformers to Northern Electricity Supply Company Limited (NESCO).

Under the Tk 400-million agreement, the state-run GEMCO will hand over the 250-KVA transformers to the state-owned NESCO in two consignments within eight months.

The signing ceremony was held at the conference room of Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC), where its director (finance) Md. Manirul Islam was present as the chief guest.

GEMCO acting managing director Md. Ashraful Islam and NESCO project director D M Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal signed the deal on behalf of the respective organisations.

Chairing the contract signing ceremony, BSEC director (planning and development) and GEMCO board chairman Bodrun Nahar said GEMCO is an ISO-certified manufacturing entity that supplies electrical equipment like various types of transformers.

The company has become a profitable state entity since the 2019-2020 financial year and now it focuses more on product diversification.

"I do believe that the type test certification that the company has achieved makes it further competitive globally."

Citing recent opinions of the sector insiders in response to a circular of the Cabinet Division regarding reasons behind the growing number of fire incidents, she noted that low quality of transformers was blamed by them.

"I think our quality transformers are very effective to reduce the risk of fire incidents," she added.

NESCO managing director Zakiul Islam said they want to ensure uninterrupted and quality power supply to Rajshahi and Rangpur regions, and transformers are the key component to do it.

"GEMCO has the reputation of manufacturing quality transformers. That's why we've kept our faith on the entity. It will also help reduce our operational and maintenance costs."

He also requested the GEMCO authority to make the product further competitive through reducing its price.

BSEC director (finance) Md. Manirul Islam suggested the GEMCO authority to think whether the item price can be reduced without compromising quality and standard.

At the same time, he also suggested the transformer producing entity to be careful in delivering post-sale services to its clients.
