The Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase on Tuesday approved proposals for import of 80,000 tonnes of fertiliser to ensure uninterrupted supply of this essential agricultural input for the upcoming cultivation season, reports UNB.
The approval came from a meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase held virtually with Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed in the chair.
The Committee endorsed the import of 40,000 tonnes of bulk granular urea fertiliser from Fertiglobe Distribution Limited, UAE at a price of US$409.50 per tonne under the Ministry of Industries.
The total contract value stands at Tk 2.01 billion (Tk 201.14 crore).
Besides, under a state-level agreement between Morocco's OCP Nutricrops and Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), the Committee recommended approval for importing 40,000 tonnes of DAP fertiliser under the 9th lot.
The consignment will be purchased at US$682.67 per tonne, with a total value of Tk 3.35 billion (Tk 335.32 crore).
Officials said the imports will help stabilize the fertiliser market and support agricultural production nationwide.
