GP sends abroad Tk 37.52b profit

Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Abdul Latif Siddique Wednesday told the parliament that the five foreign mobile phone operators in the country sent abroad Tk 39.56 billion profit till 2012, reports BSS.

"Some six including state run and foreign mobile phone operators are running cell phone operation in the country," he told the house while replying to a question of treasury bench member M Israfil Alam. The minister said other foreign mobile phone operators are Grameenphone Bangladesh Limited, Robi Axiata Limited (Robi), Banglalink Digital Communications Limited, Airtel Bangladesh Limited and Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited.

He said Grameenphone Bangladesh Limited and Robi Axiata Limited sent abroad their Tk 39.56 billion profit from 2000 to 2012 abroad, while Grameenphone sent abroad Tk 37.52 billion profit during the period of 2003-2012.

Replying to another question of treasury bench member Mahfuzur Rahman, Latif Siddique said that a total of 116.9 million SIM cards are active in the country till July 2014.
