Guidelines soon on new spectrum

Country's telecom regulator has moved to formulate guidelines on allocation of 700MHz-band spectrum so that mobile-phone operators can explore new services by using the electromagnetic waves.
The spectrum is much potential for serving broadband internet through 4G/ LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology, according to industry-insiders.
The Bangladesh Tele-communication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has already formed a 12-member committee headed by a commissioner, Monirul Alam, to draft the guideline.
Currently, mobile-phone operators are permitted to use 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz band spectra only for 2G and 3G services.
However, 3G service providers can provide 4G/LTE service by using the band, subject to permission of the regulator as per the 'Cellular Mobile Phone Service (3G/4G/LTE) Regulatory Licensing Guideline 2012'.
Sources said the mobile operators are pressing for the band as it is much valuable to them for new services. Broadband internet service through 4G technology is several times faster than 3G internet service.
"BTRC will call auction for the new spectrum band after formulation the guidelines," a BTRC official said.  However, the operators need not have new licence for the service.
Last September, the regulator called auction for 2100MHz band for 3G service.
At present, five operators, including state-run Teletalk, are providing 3G service. Already, the operators have reached their network coverage to seven divisional headquarters as well as some potential districts.
