Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam on Thursday urged mobile operator Grameenphone to address persistent public concerns over call drops, network quality and the pricing of voice and data packages, saying that customer interests must remain a top priority.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of Grameenphone's 'Digital Inclusion for Marginalized Communities -- Phase II' programme at a city hotel, the minister said telecom operators should take effective measures to ensure affordable, reliable and uninterrupted services for consumers.
"While business growth is important, equal importance must also be given to customers' expectations and interests," he said, adding that providing high-quality services should remain the foremost responsibility of service providers.
The minister said the benefits of digital technology must reach every citizen, particularly women, youth, persons with disabilities, transgender people and other marginalised communities, enabling them to participate fully in the country's digital transformation.
The government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is expanding digital connectivity nationwide while prioritising digital inclusion, digital literacy and the development of a skilled workforce to support Bangladesh's goal of becoming a US$1 trillion economy by 2034, he said.
Calling for wider expansion of telecommunications services in remote and underserved areas, Mr Anam said no region should be left behind in the country's digital transformation journey.
He added that accessible and affordable connectivity is essential for inclusive development and improving people's quality of life.
The minister formally inaugurated the 'Digital Inclusion for Marginalized Communities - Phase II' programme at the end of the event.
Among those present were Grameenphone Chief Executive Officer Yasir Azman, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Md Emdad Ul Bari, senior government officials, private sector representatives, development partners and other stakeholders.
