The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia hosted a Batik Workshop and Batik Fashion Show on the embassy premises in Dhaka on Monday.
The event was organised in collaboration with Batik House Indonesia (BHI), represented by Venny Afwany Alamsyah, a renowned Indonesian batik artisan, says a statement.
Participants included members of the Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) of the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka, representatives from various textile and fashion companies in Dhaka, BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT), the Ministry of Jute and Textile of Bangladesh, artists, and art enthusiasts.
The workshop aimed to introduce the process of batik-making and deepen the understanding of the philosophy behind this traditional art.
Mr. Arif Suyoko, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Republic of Indonesia in Dhaka, officially inaugurated the event.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Suyoko highlighted that batik is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO on October 2, 2009. This recognition elevated batik to a globally valued cultural heritage.
He emphasised that Indonesian batik comes in a variety of patterns and motifs, influenced by a wide range of cultures including Arabic, European, Chinese, Japanese, South Asian, and Persian. Batik is widely used across Southeast Asia and is well known internationally.
Mr. Suyoko expressed hope that the event would pave the way for future cooperation between Indonesia and Bangladesh in the fashion industry, including potential collaboration between Indonesian batik and Bangladesh's traditional sari fabric.
During the event, a captivating performance of the Burung Enggang dance from East Kalimantan was presented by Era Chakma, a Bangladeshi citizen and alumna of the Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship (BSBI).
The batik fashion show followed, featuring DWP members and staff from the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka as models.
