Jamalpur EZ ready for factory building

All development work of Jamalpur Economic Zone (JEZ) has almost been completed, officials said, reports BSS.
They said interested investors can now start setting up industrial units at the JEZ, the first economic zone in northern region of the country.
The Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) is establishing the EZ on 436 acres of land in the district.
"Land development work will be completed within a week. Other works will also be completed next year. So, any investor can start setting up industries in the economic zone from now," a senior official, related to the EZ, told the news agency.
He said the BEZA has already established a power sub-station at the Jamalpur EZ with the aim of ensuring uninterrupted supply of electricity to the factories of the economic zone.
"Gas connection has already been provided at the EZ. The construction of administrative building is going on (in full swing). Like other EZ, the BEZA will ensure all sorts of facilities for the investors of the EZ," he mentioned.
The senior official said BEZA has launched plot allocation prospectus for prospective investors at the EZ and already a total of 18 local and foreign investors have purchased prospectus for investing at the EZ.
He noted that Jamalpur district has comparative advantage in terms of abundant agriculture and livestock resources along with extensive presence of low cost manpower.
The government is establishing the EZ in order to utilise this resource potential of Jamalpur and other neighbouring districts to boost the economic development in this region, he informed.
He also said that the objective of this project is to attract foreign and local investment to industrialise the country for export promotion. It also aims to fulfill the requirements of locals and people of the country as a whole which will lead to employment generation and economic development.
In April 2016, Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the construction of JEZ for industrial hubs including agro-based industries, food processing, jute and jute-based products, apparel or readymade garment (RMG) and pharmaceuticals.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of JEZ on April 3 this year.
The EZ will play an important role in decentralisation of industries and employment of around 0.1 million (one lakh) people.
