FE Report | August 05, 2014 00:00:00

Turnover value on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) crossed Tk 5.50 billion-mark Monday after three months, powered by investors' buying spree on large cap stocks.

Daily turnover value jumped to Tk 5.60 billion, registering an increase of 30.84 per cent over the previous session's value of Tk 4.28 billion. It was also the highest turnover since Tk 6.73 billion on April 24, this year.

However, the ever highest turnover on the DSE was recorded Tk 32.49 billion on December 5, 2010.

The investors' activity was mostly concentrated on fuel and power, pharmaceuticals, textile and engineering sectors, accounted for 16.87 per cent, 14.79 per cent, 12.10 per cent and 11.43 per cent of the day's total turnover.

Along with increasing turnover, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange -DSEX also shot up 46.38 points or 1.04 per cent to close at 4,467.00 points.

The other two indices also ended higher. The DS30, comprising blue chips gained 23.89 points or 1.46 per cent to close at 1,654.99 points. The DSE Shariah Index advanced 14.22 points or 1.41 per cent to close at 1,022.47 points.

"The market continued its recent positive streak as the investors are starting to believe the prolonged bearish spell may finally be over," commented International Leasing Securities, in its daily market analysis.

Price appreciation in most of the sectors along with significant price movement of several large cap stocks fuelled the prime index to record gain, said the International Leasing.

"Triggered by selective stock-specific focus, the bourse moved ahead with a hype of 46.39 points to close DSEX at 19-session peak," said IDLC Investments.

Volatility prolonged with more stocks being in positive territory, indicating a search for worthwhile spread in undervalued stocks, said the merchant bank.

Favourable prices impulsed investors' participation and assisted total turnover to cross Tk 5.50 billion level after three months, the merchant bank added.
