Malaysia-goers to pay Tk 78K each: Minister

Migration starts this month

FE REPORT | July 07, 2022 00:00:00

The government has fixed Tk 77,990 as the cost of migration for each worker bound for Malaysia, said expatriates' welfare and overseas employment minister Imran Ahmad on Wednesday.

The cost covers the recruiting agency's service charge (equivalent to one month's wage of a worker) and medical check-up fee, among others.

On the other hand, Malaysia will bear most of the recruitment charges, including airfare, visa and immigration, he adds.

The cost has been fixed as per a memorandum of understanding and the first joint-working group (JWG) meeting between the two countries last month.

Mr Ahmad urges overseas jobseekers not to provide more than the cost fixed by the government.

He hopes migration to Malaysia will start this month (July). "We're taking necessary preparation step by step to send workers to that country."

The minister earlier announced that the Southeast Asian country would start hiring workers by June, but the process did not begin due to some complexities.

Bangladesh would be able to send over 200,000 workers to Malaysia by the next one year following the resumption of the market, he told the media after the JWG meeting on June 02.

Malaysia, a vital market for local workers, entered into a fresh deal with Bangladesh on 19 December 2021 for hiring workers for different sectors.

Manpower recruiters say they will duly follow the official rate for sending migrants to Malaysia.

They, however, cite challenges for involvement of subagents at different stages and also seek state support to maintain the recruitment fare.

Each worker will earn Malaysian ringgit (MYR) 1,500 or about 30,000 in Bangladesh taka as monthly wage. Food and accommodation will be borne by their employers.

Malaysia will hire foreign workers for sectors like plantation, agriculture, manufacturing, service, mining and quarrying, and construction.

The reopening comes after about four years' ban since September 2018 following syndication in the previous recruitment system.

More than 1.0-million Bangladeshis have gone to Malaysia for jobs since 1978, discloses the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET) data.
