Market closes flat with decline in turnover

Pharma cos grab 19.4pc of transaction

Dhaka bourse closed the Tuesday's session marginally higher amid day-long volatility following investors' cautious stance.

On the day, the major sectors of listed securities performed mixed and Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) saw a decline in turnover as many remained silent in the sidelines of trading fence.

Dhaka bourse opened the day's session positively but soon later the DSE broad index DSEX witnessed volatility and a recovery stance was observed during midsession.

After the midsession, the broad index displayed a downward trend and finally avoided loss riding on last hour's buoyancy.

At the end of the session, the DSEX settled at 6392.85 with a rise of 0.16 per cent or 4.19 points.

The shariah based index DSES advanced 0.14 per cent or 2.04 points to close at 1403.53.

DS30 index comprising blue chip securities went down by 0.02 per cent or 0.55 point to close at 2350.25.

Of 376 issues traded on Tuesday, 138 advanced, 195 declined and 43 remained unchanged.

"The country's premier bourse clutched its upward rally as investors remained mostly on the sidelines due to the rise in the interest rate," said a market review of EBL Securities.

Of the large cap companies, the prices of Grameenphone, Beximco, Renata, MJL Bangladesh and Walton Hi-Tech Industries declined ranging 0.13 per cent to 1.12 per cent per share on the premier bourse DSE.

The premier bourse DSE on Tuesday posted a turnover of Tk 6.38 billion which was 23.74 per cent lower than the turnover of the previous session.

Of total turnover, Tk 416 million came from transactions executed in block board.

"Stocks inched up amid cautious trading. Investors are worried of market adversity due to deteriorating exchange rates and rising interest rate," said a market review of International Leasing Securities.

Of the sector which saw price appreciation, bank advanced 0.3 per cent, fuel & power 0.1 per cent, general insurance 3.9 per cent, life insurance 0.3 per cent, and food & allied 0.2 per cent.

Of the sectors which witnessed price correction, engineering declined 0.4 per cent, telecommunication 0.3 per cent and textile 0.1 per cent.

Investors' participation was concentrated mostly on pharmaceuticals & chemicals sector which grabbed 19.4 per cent of the market turnover followed by miscellaneous 11.6 per cent, textile 9.7 per cent, general insurance 8.9 per cent and food & allied 8.4 per cent.

Beximco topped the scrip wise turnover chart with a value of Tk 511 million followed by Orion Pharma Tk 269 million, Fu Wang Food Tk 184 million, GSP Finance Tk 167 million and Beximco Pharmaceuticals Tk 136 million.

Sonar Bangla Insurance Company was the number one gainer with a rise of 9.94 per cent to close at Tk 50.40 each.

Pravati Insurance Company was the number one loser after declining 5.84 per cent to close at Tk 66.10 each.

CASPI, benchmark index of Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), declined 0.18 per cent or 35.27 points to close at 18667.50 points on Tuesday.

Of 279 issues traded, 86 advanced, 162 declined and 31 remained unchanged and the port city bourse posted a turnover of Tk 175.71 million.
