Mobile handset -'OK Mobile'- made by a local manufacturer was launched Thursday for the first time in the country.
Primarily two types of handsets, especially low-end feature phone and smartphone, will be available in the market, said the organisers at a press conference at a city hotel on the day.
Price of the regular feature phone was fixed at Tk 1,200 and that of the 3G-enabled handset at Tk 4,000. All the handsets will have dual SIM facility and some will come with 2 megapixel to 12 megapixel cameras.
State-owned Telephone Shilpa Sangstha Ltd (TSS) and private company OK Mobile BD Inc USA jointly took the initiative to market the locally assembled mobile handsets.
The organisers said they have a target to market around 0.10 million (one lac) pieces every month by taking necessary accessories from China. But now they have started marketing with around 30 thousand handsets.
Company sources said they cannot start assembling of mobile handsets in full swing, but have started marketing of the product to make it known as OK Mobile brand to the people during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
Chairman of OK Mobile Khondoker Jamil Uddin introduced the mobile handsets before the media and expressed hope that they will be able to capture a significant market share of the product within two years.
OK mobile sources also said they have plans to introduce high-end handsets priced between Tk 25,000 and Tk 30,000, as well as those ranging from Tk 7,000 to 8,000, Tk 14,000 to 16,000 and Tk 22,000 to 24,000.
The company has no plan of making profit within two years, but they expect to have a 10 per cent to 12 per cent market share in Bangladesh. OK Mobile has target to export handsets to some countries in Africa and Latin America as well.
Earlier, the TSS - a government firm under the telecom ministry - collaborated with Malaysian firm TFT to launch the "Doel" laptop, but the project did not see much success.
