The Ministry of Finance (MoF) Monday issued a statement clarifying that the reports published and telecast in various daily newspapers and news channels quoting the Finance Minister Monday on 'Corruption in Banking Sector' was incorrect.
"Replying to a question of reporters the minister said that the government had undertaken different measures to uproot corruption from the society that had become a social curse and was spreading across the country," the statement signed by the ministry's Senior Information Officer Shahedur Rahman said.
Use of information technology and procedural reforms are the two main steps the government had undertaken, it said.
Many government officials were drawn to corruption due to low salaries for which the government is also taking steps to raise their salaries.
The minister said the government had increased the salaries by 62 per cent five years ago and has already constituted a fresh pay and service commission.
The statement claimed that the minister told the media that the government had undertaken different steps to stop further heists at state owned banks after the Sonali Bank Kishoreganj branch robbery and Hallmark scandal but as it needs some more time to implement those, the robbery at Sonali Bank Adamdighi Branch in Bogra occurred.
"The minister said that the Sonali Bank and other state owned banks have beefed-up their internal control systems for which incidents like Sonali Bank Hallmark scandal would not happen again," the statement said.
The minister said the offsite supervision has increased manifold as well as supervision at branch level has also increased and the definition of bank directors have been redefined for which it will be impossible for such scandals to occur again, the statement said.
The minister also apprehended that the enhanced supervision and monitoring may sometime lead to lengthy banking services, it said.
