NESCO installs smart prepayment meters

RAJSHAHI, Sept 30: Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton has said, during the previous government the country was facing 3,500 megawatt of shortages of electricity but now under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina the country has now a surplus of electricity.

By recovering billions of Taka loss in the electricity sector, the country has earned Tk 60 million profit this year. Even, by enacting new law and changing the existing electricity act, the government of Sheikh Hasina has earned a huge success in producing electricity and her pledge to supply electricity to 100 per cent of houses of the country marking the 100th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is now a reality.

Mayor Liton advised the electricity department officials to take caution during cutting of trees and their branches from above the electric wires in the stormy season so that the beauty of the tree is not hampered. He added, if necessary, the Environment Development Section of RCC will assist them in their work. He thanked the Northern Electricity Supply Company Limited for its initiative to install Smart Pre-payment meters in Rajshahi City areas.

RCC Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton was addressing as the chief guest at a seminar organised on installation of Smart Prepayment Meters in Rajshahi Region under Smart Prepayment Metering Project of Northern Electricity Supply Company Limited (NESCO) at the City Hall Conference room on Wednesday.

Jakuil Islam, Managing Director of NESCO attended as the key-note speaker at the seminar. Jakiul Islam in the seminar informed, despite various limitations, NESCO has been serving the consumers and continue to serve them to their total satisfaction. He added, there will be no more scope of serving electricity bills without reading the meter and there will be no more 'ghost' billing after installation of the smart prepayment meters under NESCO.

He mentioned, NESCO was working tirelessly with nearly 1.6 million clients in 39 upazilas of 16 northern districts of the country to supply uninterrupted electricity, to render more consumer services and to implement Rupkolpo-2021 of the Government of Bangladesh.

Presently, two projects are continuing on electricity distribution line and sub-centre expansion in Rajshahi and Rangpur zones while two more projects have been undertaken to install solar home systems in the off grid char areas of Rangpur and Rajshahi zones.

MD Jakiul Islam further said, a total of 0.5 million prepayment smart meters will be installed under 16 districts of northern region. The smart prepayment metering system will end the electricity consumers from the hassles of bill related issues and the clients will get one per cent rebate and they would be able to pay the bill and recharge the meter through online from anywhere in the world.

The semainar was attended, among others, by RCC Panel Mayor 1 & ward councillor 12 Shariful Islam Babu, Chief Executive Officer Dr. ABM Sharif Uddin and Secretary of RCC Rahmatullah while the seminar was conducted by Superintendent Engineer of NESCO (Operation and Preservation) Shirin Yeasmin.
