Besides selling essential commodities at subsidised rates to the 10 million card-holder families, the government is also contemplating making an almost similar arrangement for the middle-income group in the future.

State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu, MP disclosed the government plan on Sunday, saying that the middle-income group would then be able to buy the essentials from the outlets of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) at 'fair prices'.

He was inaugurating the TCB's month-long sales drive at Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni playground at Pallabi in Mirpur-11.

The junior minister further said a move is underway to start selling the TCB goods from its permanent shops/points of sales among the card-holder families from the next financial year.

"We're giving four products at subsidised prices to the families, while contributing to reduce the price pressure on the market," he said, adding that the sales drive helps meet the demand for sugar, rice, pulses and edible oil to some extent.

Under the drive, each of the card-holder families can buy a maximum 2.0 litres of soybean oil at Tk 100 per litre, 2.0 kg of lentils at Tk 60 per kg and 1.0 kg of sugar at Tk 70 per kg, and 5.0 kg of rice at Tk 30 per kg from the specific points.

The TCB dealers will operate the sales activities from their shops or selected spots as per schedule with support from the city and local government authorities.
