Discussants at a programme Saturday said many investors of the capital market are mostly influenced by rumour and speculation although their decisions should be taken based on investment theory.
They said this at a programme arranged at a city hotel to unveil the cover of the book titled of 'Basics of Capital Market' authored by chief executive officer (CEO) of AFC Capital Limited Mahbub Hossain Mazumder.
Former minister and parliamentarian ABM Ghulam Mostafa, also the incumbent chairman of AFC Capital Limited, chaired the programme.
At the programme Dr. Md. Abu Yusuf, deputy secretary and customs specialist of US Aid said sometimes eccentric behaviour of capital market is observed as investors are influenced by rumour and speculation.
"Many investors are motivated by emotion as they are not aware of the concept and theory of investment. I hope they will be able to get basic knowledge from the book written by Mr. Mazumder," Mr. Yusuf said.
Former Minister Mr. Mostafa said around 80 thousand companies are registered by Registrar of Joint Stock Companies and Firms (RJSC) but the number of listed companies is only above 300.
"Many companies are less interested to go public for fear of accountability. The listing of such companies should be made mandatory by regulations," Mostafa said.
Farid Ahmed, the owner of Shomoy Publications, blamed the capital shortage in boosting the country's publication sector.
"Literacy of general people is increasing day by day. But the publication sector is yet to be declared as industry by the government," Ahmed said.
