Mobile application (app) software development business is gradually increasing in the local market as the use of smart phones is scaling up.

According to importers, 10 million smart phone sets had been imported annually during the last three years and the use was accelerating.

The chief executive officer of a Dhaka-based mobile apps developing company said the job of developing such apps was increasing at a faster rate in the country.

According to him, of the all ICT (information and communication technology) companies, at least 81 have the capacity to develop mobile applications. Of them, 10-12 have the capacity to work for international clients developing mobile apps.

He said more than 30 Bangladeshi mobile apps experts were developing such software and they put them on offer on international websites.

According to a mobile apps exporter, currently Bangladesh is not in a position to earn from the online download of their apps by clients in the international market.

He said it emerged as a new concept and only a few local companies had invested in the business. So, it would take a long time to be in the global market.

An ICT expert said the world mobile apps market size presently accounted for $8.0 billion and Bangladesh lagged far behind.

He said currently only the BASIS members had the opportunity to make online payments to their clients.

He said the local apps developers needed to do international transactions online to enter the international apps market. If granted, the facility would help them outsource the mobile application jobs.

Mobile apps are additional services, which are supported by Internet-enabled smart phones or such other sets.

Apps in games, different value added services, corporate and many other purposes are now available.

The local telecom operators were currently dependent on local IT engineers who were working for them and currently a good number of IT engineers were developing many value added services-based apps for the telecom companies, a source in the BASIS said.

As it is a new concept and a new field of earnings, there is yet no clear guideline of the government on it.

A Bangladesh Bank official said the central bank already offered some facilities to help entrepreneurs outsource the jobs.

He said in the days to come the central bank authority would also provide different payment facilities that would help both the apps and software outsourcing entrepreneurs in making their international payments online.
