Stocks gain as investors show buying appetite in blue chips

FE REPORT | May 06, 2024 00:00:00

The Dhaka bourse closed the week's first session, with an enthusiastic recovery mood, and extended the gaining steak for the third consecutive session as most stocks experienced price appreciation.

Although small-cap companies made it to the gainers' list, the blue chip stocks played a pivotal role behind the sharp gain of the DSEX, broad index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE).

The Sunday's session began with a positive note and the DSEX exhibited a steady upward trend till the midsession.

Later, the broad index lost some points but recovered the loss before closure at 5692 points. The day's gain was 1.36 per cent or 76.41 points.

Saiful Islam, president of the DSE Brokers Association, said the companies, which drove the market, performed well; Banks and drug makers scored well in profits and dividends.

"It's a good sign. General investors' investment decisions must be prudent," Mr Islam said.

Asked about the rationality of a sharp rise in a single day, he said rational ups and downs would be observed after a certain time.

The 10 companies, which propelled the broad index, included Beacon Pharmaceuticals, Beximco Pharmaceuticals, British American Tobacco Bangladesh, Renata, and BRAC Bank.

These companies added 41.6 points to the broad index on Sunday.

Investor participation was mostly concentrated on the pharmaceuticals and chemicals sector, meaning their interest in the stocks had been hyped.

The sector on Sunday posted a turnover of Tk 2.23 billion and grabbed 27.3 per cent of the market turnover.

Following investors' increased participation, the DSE featured a turnover of more than Tk 8 billion for the second time since March 5.

Earlier on April 30, the DSE posted a turnover of Tk 8.35 billion.

Far East Knitting & Dyeing Industries was the number one gainer with a rise of 10 per cent on Sunday, while ADN Telecom was the worst loser, having struck the circuit breaker.

Of the 401 issues traded, 259 advanced, 98 declined and 44 remained unchanged on the premier bourse.
