State-run Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd (TGTDCL) has received Euro 18,364.72 as the first installment under a clean development mechanism (CDM) project for reducing natural gas leakage within the TGTDCL franchise area, said officials.
This is the first and only CDM project, registered with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in the country's gas sector.
"The transaction of payment was confirmed by Danish NE Climate A/S," TGTDCL managing director Md Nawshad Islam told the FE Wednesday.
He said the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction under the project would be 4.37 million tonne carbon dioxide per year.
The project between the TGTDCL and the Danish firm was registered with the UNFCCC on March 17, 2015.
The project activity aimed at reducing natural gas leakage in the distribution network of Titas through implementation of advanced leak detection and repairs (LDAR) procedures.
The project activities include inspection and leak measurements as well as repair works at components in the natural gas above ground distribution system.
In addition, selected staff of Titas would be trained in advanced leak detection, measurement, and repair techniques.
Additional staff of around 50 would be hired to implement the project.
Officials said, Titas currently has only two hydrocarbon leak detectors for use throughout its more than 12,000-kilometre system.
The quantity of these conventional detection devices is insufficient for widespread use. Consequently, examination of leaks is primarily undertaken through visual, noise and odour detection.
As such, existing procedures are only detecting minimal leaks occurring in the system.
Even for those leaks that were identified through noise or odour, the company lacks modern repair materials required to fix all but the simplest leaks.
Titas principally uses polyethylene-based tape and leak repair clamps to make the above-ground repairs.
"This approach is not suited for long-term repairs on leaks in outdoor equipments that face varying temperatures and humidity. Quickly this material dries up and loses any ability to stop leakage," said Mr Nawshad.
He said under the project, the Danish firm would help Titas reduce its leakage by using sophisticated technology and machinery at their own costs.
The firm will help introduce a sophisticated management system to reduce Titas's pipeline leakages.
