Turnover declines to Tk 5.34b on DSE

FE Report | February 14, 2014 00:00:00

Stocks edged marginally lower Thursday with turnover decline slightly as apparent cool down of market rally continued to fuel realization of quick profit.

The market opened with a positive note, but could not sustain. The prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) --- DSEX ---went down by 4.38 points or 0.09 per cent to 2-week low of 4,759.32 points as traders ditched shares in last hours.

The Shariah Index (DSES) follow the same pace losing 0.85 points or 0.08 per cent to close the session at 995.74 points.

However, the DS30 index, comprising blue chips advanced 3.22 points or 0.19 per cent to close at 1,696.65 points as some blue-chip stocks posted large gain on a single day trading.

The total turnover on DSE stood at Tk 5.34 billion, registering 6.73 per cent decline over the previous session's turnover value of Tk 5.72 billion.

"DSE traders were in wobbly mood Thursday. Market opened green, but hefty supply of some large-cap stocks offset the buy pressure and finally closed the index in red," said LankaBangla Securities, in its daily market analysis.

The market is bracing for economic realism at present. 11.29 per cent rise in import in January of this year and expectation of slides in inflation were in top in the economic part, the stock broker said.

"Investors appeared to be jittery about corporate profit," the stock broker added

"Imitating last few sessions, opening upbeat vibe of the day's session subsided and turned negative over selling pressure," said IDLC Investments.

Apparent cool down of market rally continued to fuel realization of quick profit. Consequently, DSEX closed at 4,759 points, remaining below 4,800 points level for the last four sessions, said the merchant bank.

However, spurred by some Mid Cap scrips, blue chip index outperformed prime index to be in green zone, the merchant bank added.

"Market could not generate enough strength to support a rally and therefore plunged down with the closing of the week," said Zenith Investments.

However, amplified pressure from both buyers and sellers did not let the total turnover volume slide much than last trading day, the Zenith analysis said.

The gainers took a lead over the losers as out of 287 issues traded, 136 advanced, 125 declined and 26 issues closed unchanged on the DSE floor.

Among the major sectors, fuel & power gained the most, going up by 1.49 per cent followed by NBFI 0.01 per cent almost flat.

The other large cap sectors all ended lower - banks lost 0.62 per cent, pharmaceuticals 0.34 per cent, telecommunications 0.11 per cent and food & allied lost 0.01 per cent.
