Turnover hits below Tk 10b mark

Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) closed the Tuesday's session with a marginal loss in broad index which extended the losing streak for third consecutive session following investors' lower participation.

On the day, the turnover went down below Tk 10 billion mark after 35 sessions executed since January 2 last.

The premier bourse DSE opened the day's session positively and the broad index DSEX continued its upward trend for half an hour.

Later, the DSEX lost some points amid some weak recovery stances during mid-session amid the down trend.

The broad index recovered some points before closure of the session and settled at 6917.90 with a loss of 0.12 per cent or 8.71 points.

The shariah based index DSES declined 0.23 per cent or 3.54 points to close at 1495.22.

The DS30 index comprising blue chip securities settled at 2536.36 with a loss of 0.36 per cent or 9.24 points.

According to a market review of EBL Securities, Dhaka stocks lost points as investors' sell pressure continued on the bourse due to portfolio rebalancing attempts.

"Trading activities were sluggish on Tuesday while turnover dipped below the threshold of Tk 10 billion mark as most investors are reluctant to pour fresh funds amid the ongoing bearish vibe in order to avoid any potential correction," said the EBL Securities.

Of 376 issues traded on Tuesday, 173 advanced, 154 declined and 49 were unchanged on the DSE.

The premier bourse on Tuesday posted a turnover of Tk 9.08 billion which was 20.34 per cent less than the turnover of the previous session.

Of total turnover, Tk 459 million came from transactions executed in the block board.

"Turnover dropped below Tk 10 billion mark-level within last two months as investors refrained themselves from making any new investment amid lack of clear market direction," said another market review of International Leasing Securities.

IT advanced 2.5 per cent, services & real estate 1.6 per cent, travel & leisure 1.7 per cent, and fuel & power 0.1 per cent.

Banking declined 0.1 per cent, telecommunication 0.2 per cent, miscellaneous 0.7 per cent, tannery 0.6 per cent, jute 3.0 per cent and cement 0.3 per cent.

Investors' participation was concentrated mostly on pharmaceuticals & chemicals sector which grabbed 12.30 per cent of the market turnover followed by miscellaneous 11.60 per cent, telecommunication 11.20 per cent and engineering 11.1 per cent.

Beximco topped the scrip wise turnover chart with a value of Tk 649 million followed by Orion Pharma Tk 359 million, Fortune Shoes Tk 275 million, Bangladesh Shipping Corporation Tk 221 million and British American Tobacco Company Tk 200 million.

ADN Telecom was the number one gainer with a rise of 10 per cent or Tk 5.30 to close at Tk 58.30 each.

Aramit Cement was the worst loser after declining 6.34 per cent to close at Tk 44.30 each.

CASPI, benchmark index of Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), on Tuesday closed at 20231.23 with a rise of 0.76 point.

Of 304 issues traded, 136 advanced, 132 declined and 36 were unchanged and the port-city bourse posted a turnover of Tk 244.23 million.
