The World Bank has offered assistance to the Anti-Corruption Commission, or ACC, in collecting documentary evidence for the recovery of embezzled assets, reports bdnews24.com.
This discussion occurred during a meeting aimed at enhancing the institutional capacity of the ACC, particularly in preventing money laundering and recovering misappropriated resources.
On Tuesday, Emile Johannes Marie Van Der Does De Willebois, the bank's lead financial sector specialist for the Stolen Asset Recovery initiative, and Financial Sector Specialist Sophie Dong met ACC Chairman Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah at the commission's headquarters.
The meeting began at 1:45pm and ended with the World Bank delegation departing at 3:30pm.
During the session, the representatives received an overview of the ACC's activities.
After the meeting, ACC Director General (prevention) Md Akhtar Hossain told reporters: "We discussed how they could assist in the recovery of embezzled assets and the initiatives that could be taken to enhance the capabilities of our officials."
He noted that discussions included how the World Bank could help improve the skills of ACC officials.
"We talked about the challenges faced by our investigators in financial investigations and how they could provide assistance in these areas," he added.
He also said the focus is on collecting documentary evidence from countries where embezzled funds originate.
"They indicated that collecting such evidence is an ongoing process. Without the cooperation of the relevant countries, this can be quite difficult. However, they have assured us that they will engage with law-enforcing agencies in those countries to discuss ways to assist in the recovery of embezzled funds. They have committed to maintaining communication and cooperation with us."
