New 'Mysterious Elephant' cyber campaign targets South Asian government networks

A new cyber-espionage campaign by the 'Mysterious Elephant' APT group is targeting government and foreign affairs agencies across South Asia, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Identified in early 2025 by Kaspersky's Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT), the campaign focuses on the theft of highly sensitive data such as documents, images, archived files and, notably, WhatsApp content.

The attackers use a mix of custom and open-source tools, relying heavily on PowerShell scripts for command execution and persistence. Their primary tool, BabShell, enables reverse-shell access, system profiling and in-memory payload deployment through modules such as MemLoader HidenDesk, helping evade detection. The group's infrastructure relies on wildcard DNS, VPSs and cloud hosting to generate rapidly shifting subdomains and hinder tracking.

Kaspersky warns that understanding the group's tactics and strengthening cyber hygiene, patching, and network monitoring are critical to defending against such advanced espionage operations.
