Kaspersky warns of rising phishing attacks
targeting shoppers and gamers
Kaspersky reports that cybercriminals in 2025 increasingly exploited seasonal shopping periods and popular gaming platforms to distribute phishing pages and fraudulent promotions aimed at stealing personal and payment information. From January to October, Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) blocked 6,394,854 phishing attempts impersonating online stores, banks, and payment systems, with nearly half targeting online shoppers.
Gaming platforms saw a major rise in attacks, with over 20 million attempts, including 18.56 million on Discord alone-more than 14 times the volume recorded in 2024. Major gaming systems such as Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox were also targeted, registering 2,054,336 phishing attempts. Black Friday and Single's Day campaigns drove 146,535 spam emails in early November, many reusing previous templates and impersonating Amazon, Walmart, and Alibaba. Streaming platforms faced significant threats as well, with 801,148 Netflix-themed and 576,873 Spotify-related phishing attempts.
"This data shows attackers are operating across the full digital ecosystem," said Olga Altukhova, Senior Web Content Analyst at Kaspersky. "They track user activity across shopping, gaming, streaming, and communication platforms. Consumers must remain vigilant, practising strong security hygiene, especially during peak online activity periods."
